About us

The London Nautical School was founded in 1915, as a consequence of the official report into the loss of the “Titanic”. In 1990, it became one of the country’s first 11-18 comprehensive secondary schools for boys to be awarded grant maintained status.

In September 1999, we became a Foundation School within the London Borough of Lambeth. The school is situated in Stamford Street on the south bank of the River Thames, in between Blackfriars Bridge and Waterloo Bridge.

PE Department

If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, GO TOGETHER.

Welcome to Our PE Department

Here at the London Nautical School Sports College we pride ourselves on participation and achievement that stretches through the department and through the school. We have a long tradition of success within the department within both sports teams and individual learners. This is reflected in successes in sports across London and the country and is supported by a large number of boys gaining academic and vocational qualifications at both key stages four and five in the variety of sporting and academic opportunities we offer through PE and Sport.

Due to our extensive curriculum activities, we have again received the “Sportsmark” Award from Sport England and have also been recognised as a Football Association Charter Mark School, an FA C

lub Link School and as an Advanced Healthy School Status. We are also part of the GETSET network and Youth Sport Trust where we are a Partner School. Furthermore, the school has been recognised by various media for its achievements in sport. Sky Sports News, Sky News, The Times on Sunday, BBC Radio Five Live, The South London Press, BBC London News and ITV have all highlighted the excellent work of our sports college over recent years.

We provide an extensive range of National Curriculum and extra curricular activities throughout all of the key stages with increased time in PE. For the new year 7 pupils they will have four PE lessons per week consisting of one swimming lesson and three physical education lessons.

At key stage four however, pupils are given the choice of a broad selection of activities for their PE lessons. These activities make the use of both on-site and off-site opportunities. On-site there is the brand new sports hall, which can cater for sports such as indoor football, basketball, badminton, volleyball, trampolining, gymnastics, dance, climbing, spin classes, aerobics, weights classes and table tennis, as a small example. Also on-site is the fitness suite, Paris Gardens basketball/tennis courts and Hatfields five-a-side football pitches. Off-site, pupils will be able to take advantage of the fitness suite at Colombo gym.

The physical education department also offers a variety of Academic Pathways for when your son reaches key stage four and five. At key stage four your son can choose between the academic route of GCSE PE, or the vocational route through the BTEC Level two extended Diploma Sport, which is equivalent to four A* – C GCSE grades! At key stage five, pupils can study the AS Level PE, which then leads onto the A2 Level PE qualification and again the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport. This is equivalent to three A-Levels.

We also have an extensive programme of extra curricular activities before school, during lunch times, after school and at the weekends. These range from early morning swimming, Fitness, basketball, table tennis, running and triathlon clubs, indoor football and table tennis at lunch times, football, basketball, tennis, table tennis, rugby, badminton, trampolining, weights and fitness, cricket, Akido and Ju-Jitsu after school.

These clubs can then lead to representing the school in a number of different sports and activities. Over the years we have produced very successful and talented teams and individuals to represent our school. In football we have been Inner London and South London Champions (most recently with year 11 2010-2011). We have also made the quarter finals of the nationals competitions and won tournaments in Holland as part of our annual tour. In Basketball we have finished joint first in this years Lambeth Borough League Championships and in Rugby we compete in both League and Union competitions and have progressed well in the Daily Mail Cup. In Swimming we finished with the 9th quickest time in England at the Nationals in Macclesfield and have won the London Re

lay Championships and the London Senior/Junior championships against some of the best private/public schools in London. We also compete in a number of other sports, such as Athletics and Cross Country, Table Tennis, Badminton, Handball, Volleyball, Tennis, Gymnastics, Cricket, sailing and kayaking.

As well as off-site activities, we currently also offer two residential trips throughout the year. At Easter time each year we run The London Nautical School Ski Trip, which takes place at La Plagne in the French Alps. The pupils have the opportunity to Ski in a wide range of ability groups across six days and seven nights and can also take part in snowboarding if they choose.

At the end of term five (end of May and the start of June), the year 7 and year 8 first team footballers get the opportunity to go on the Holland Football Tour, taking place at Duinrell Holiday Park in Wassanaar, Holland. They take part in a football tournament against other teams from around Europe and also get the opportunity to visit the on-site theme park and water park.
