Welcome to the English Department at The London Nautical School. In Years 7, 8 and 9 English is offered for three lessons per week, during which skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening are developed. We also have dedicated Drama lessons for years 7, 8 and 9 and have regular trips to the library. We strongly believe in creating students who believe in themselves as readers and writers; students who read for pleasure and who are confident creative writers. This is fostered through our encouragement of personal reading throughout the school as well as having lessons which run in the style of creative writing workshops. We also strongly believe in the educational richness of talk as a learning tool within a classroom. This reinforces the work we do in class in relation to poetry, fiction and non-fiction texts. In Years 10 and 11, all students follow the AQA Syllabus a GCSE course in English Language and English Literature. English Literature is offered as an AS/A2 course in the Sixth Form.
We have close links with the Institute of Education, which allow us to offer in school a Year 9 Shakespeare workshop, as well as a Year 7 film project. A group of Year 8 pupils have also had the opportunity to make films at the BFI, while some Year 9 pupils worked on an inter-generational Speaking and Listening project: Age to Age. We also enjoy close links with the Young Vic, the Donmar Warehouse and the National Theatre. The department has organised a number of school productions, including Death of a Salesman and An Audience with William Shakespeare and is, as a result of these extra-curricular activities, developing a highly successful school theatre company.
