New Sports Hall For The London Nautical School Laying of a Foundation Stone by Kate Hoey MP On Wednesday 23 November 2005, Kate Hoey MP placed the foundation Stone for an exciting new complex at The London Nautical School in Stamford Street.
In August 2004, the school’s gymnasium and music centre were demolished to make way for a new Sports Hall, Music Centre, 6th Form, and classrooms, temporary facilities having been provided to make up for this loss. Work began in 2005 and will be complete by September 2006. The school became a Sports College in Sept 2003 and a new Sports Hall was exactly what was required. This will be a Community Sports Hall and funding support has been received from the Waterloo Community through a scheme known as the Single Regeneration Budget and also from the Big Lottery Fund. Ms Hoey MP used a silver trowel when laying the Foundation Stone and gave a short address to the gathering of some 200 guests. Afterwards, all present were able to view stands in the school’s main hall depicting various school activities and the Headmaster, Mr Gordon Wilson, spoke briefly on the school’s recent successes and plans for the future. Guests were treated to a cream tea before departure. During the Ceremony a stainless steel ‘time capsule’ was sealed and buried. Amongst the items contained in the capsule were a DVD about the school entitled ‘A Place for Sport’, a set of 2005 ‘mint condition’ coins including the £5 ‘Nelson’ coin and a whole school photograph. The School Captain, Zack Morgan placed a letter in the capsule from Mr Andrew Cox, Chairman of Governors, and then sealed it. Amongst the guests were the Mayor of Lambeth, Cllr Daphne Marchant, Cllr Anthony Bottrall and Cllr Charlotte Parry. Jim Clarke, Chairman of London Marathon Ltd and representatives from the National Playing Fields Association and the local community were also present. |
