Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) – for September 2009 Intake

When will the application form and prospectus be available?

          A. All documentation (Application form and prospectus) will be available on the open evening which will be held on Wednesday 24th September 2008 between 4.00pm and 6.00pm.

I have missed the Open Evening; can I have an individual tour?

          A. Due to the large number of enquiries, it is not possible to offer prospective parents individual tours.

I have missed the Open Evening, how can I get an application form?

          A. You can obtain a Supplementary Information Form (SIF) by either collecting one from the Main Reception or by telephoning the Admissions Officer on 020 7902 5045. A SIF will be put in the post to you on request. The closing date for applications is Friday 24th October 2008. Please remember to complete your local authority Common Application Form (CAF).

When is the closing date for applications?

          A. All applications have to be with the LNS by Friday 24th October by 4.00pm. Failure to meet this deadline will mean you son’s application cannot be considered. Please be aware that any false or deliberately misleading information given on the SIF or the CAF and /or supporting information may render the application invalid, or lead to the offer of a place being withdrawn. It is the responsibility of parents to ensure that their child’s application has been completed correctly:

§ The child’s date of birth must be between the 1 September 1997 and 31 August 1998.

§ Please note you must provide proof of home address for the child e.g. the child’s birth certificate, passport, child benefit or utility bill. Please do not send originals.

        Will my child be tested?

          A. Yes, your child will be tested. You will be notified by letter of your child’s testing date. This will consist of ability tests for the purpose of banding and a nautical questionnaire. This will take place mid November 2008.

When will I know the outcome of my application?

          A. All applications will be notified on National Offer Day (2nd March 2009). These letters will come from your borough (local authority). The London Nautical School will also send out our own letters of offer/rejection after this day.

Do you take children with Special Educational Needs?

          A. Yes. The parents of the children with a statement of Special Educational Needs will be invited to meet with the SENCo after we have received your application or statement. We also like these children to take the ability tests and nautical questionnaire.

How many places does the school offer?

          A. LNS’s published admissions number (PAN) for Year 7 September 2009 is 105. This is based on the net capacity calculation confirmed by Lambeth LEA in April 2005. Potential students will be admitted to the school from three ability bands.

              Band A 25% (i.e. 26 places)

              Band B 50% (i.e. 53 places)

              Band C 25% (i.e. 26 places)

Are siblings automatically offered a place at the school?

          A. No. Where applications for admission exceed the number of places available, (after allowing for places allocated to children with a statement of special educational needs naming the school), the following criteria will be applied to each ability band, in the order set out below, to decide which pupils to admit.

1.

Nautical: Rank order according to nautical interest based on responses to the nautical questionnaire.

Sport: Boys who are currently involved in a sporting activity, either land or water based, at a minimum of international / national / county or district level in priority order as indicated on the SIF.

Sibling: Sibling is defined as the brother of a pupil who will still be attending LNS in the first year of admission.

Proximity to school. (Proximity to school is measured by the shortest walking distance to school).

3. Random selection within the Ability Band.
